My last few blogs have been full of heavy-hearted material and had a somber tone to them. While I am still dealing with some of those issues, something exciting happened, and besides sharing the news, there is a funny story that goes along with it that I felt was way too funny not to share.
I am the kind of person that always makes the plans, or is heavily involved in the making of said plans, because I don’t like surprises or something going wrong that could have been avoided with a simple tweak.
However, my boyfriend, David, decided he was turning the recent weekend into my birthday weekend, and I wasn’t allowed to know anything about it, or even contribute in the smallest way to the planning of it.
Let’s just say I was a little bit anxious the entire week before because I had no idea what he was planning and conveniently he would drop little hints to what he might have had planned, which just made my curiosity grow even more.
The weekend finally came, and although I was still nervous, I was excited. Things started off sweet, and he had little “Happy Birthday” garlands and signs on my stockpile shelf in the basement.
Still having no clue what the plans were for the weekend, I got in the passenger side of the car and he headed to Spencer Farms in Noblesville, Indiana, where they have a market, various u-pick opportunities and a winery.
David said we were going to go pick pumpkins at the farm’s patch, and I was excited for multiple reasons, including I love going to pumpkin patches and we had been talking about going to get some pumpkins to decorate the front porch.
We drove out to the patch and grabbed one of the marked green carts and headed out to the land covered with acres of pumpkins and began to search for the perfect pumpkin.
David started pointing at possible pumpkins, but being a bit of a picky person and growing up in the agriculture industry proved hard for him to find the exact pumpkin I wanted because I kept saying no to the ones he pointed to either because they had scratches all over them or one side was extremely flat.
Finally, David walked quite a bit away from where I was standing. I was still searching in a particular area for a pumpkin when David called me over to look at one he thought I would like.
I headed over to where he was, not realizing he was down on one knee, and I was about to say no to the pumpkin because from where I was standing, still walking toward the pumpkin, I thought I saw a worm on top of it — yuck.
However, as I got right in front of the pumpkin, I quickly realized that what I thought was a worm was actually a ring band and upon closer look I saw it was a gorgeous engagement ring.
David said he never saw a face go from disgust to shock to happiness so fast.
I was in shock, but quickly said yes as David stood up and gave me the ring. I was so happy and so shocked and told David, “You know we are getting this pumpkin, right?”
Even though there has been a lot of craziness in the world, it is so nice to have a bit of happiness and something to look forward to in my life.
